Ontario has begun deep excavation work at Queen Station for the Ontario Line subway project, aiming to transform downtown Toronto’s transit system and strengthen the province’s infrastructure network. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The new Metrolinx platform will sit over 130 feet beneath the surface, directly under the existing TTC Queen Station. Both transit services will operate on different levels, ensuring smoother transfers.

Ontario’s Transit Expansion Targets Growth and Connectivity
The Ontario Line spans 10 miles and includes 15 stations, running from Exhibition Place to Don Mills Road. It connects with the Line 5 Eglinton light-rail, creating more efficient travel options for commuters.
Queen Station is set to become the Ontario Line’s busiest stop. The depth and complexity of the build require advanced engineering solutions and careful project management in the heart of the city.
Ontario Supports Jobs and Economic Development Through Transit
According to Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma, Ontario is making major progress with this vital project. She emphasized that it reduces gridlock, supports economic development, and delivers well-paying local jobs.
The Ontario government expects the line to improve daily commutes and stimulate urban growth. It is also part of a broader transit investment strategy targeting long-term sustainability and accessibility.
Metrolinx is actively engaging the public with updates and consultations to minimize disruptions. Officials plan to complete the Ontario Line by the early 2030s, maintaining a steady pace on all construction fronts.
This strategic initiative reinforces Ontario’s commitment to modern transit while revitalizing key areas of Toronto with future-ready infrastructure.
