17.07.2025
Ontario has moved forward on its Northlander revival plan by awarding EllisDon a contract to build the Timmins-Porcupine station, enhancing regional transport and creating stronger economic links for northern communities. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Ontario Moves Ahead with Northlander Project
Construction has begun with work on the platform, parking area, and a passenger waiting space. The station will include accessible washrooms, comfortable seating, and a ticket counter to meet passenger needs.

Outside, travelers will find an accessible platform, parking zones, motor coach bays, pedestrian paths, and designated pickup and drop-off points. A taxi stand will further improve convenience and connectivity for commuters.

Ontario’s Investment Supports Growth
Officials emphasize the terminal will strengthen northern industries, tourism, and the resource sector. Though the contract’s financial terms remain undisclosed, the project reflects Ontario’s commitment to infrastructure and economic expansion.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria stated, “Our government is putting shovels in the ground to deliver the Northlander and improve access to jobs, health care, and opportunity for northern communities.”
Track upgrades along the route are underway to allow higher speeds and fewer delays. Once operational, the train will offer northbound service from Toronto and southbound trips from Timmins, running up to seven days weekly.
The route will feature 16 stops in both directions, including a key link to Cochrane. Ontario Northland Railway, owned by the province, will operate the service, which was discontinued in 2012 and replaced by buses.
The rail service is expected to restart next year, restoring a vital connection for residents and businesses while supporting sustainable regional growth.
