The new double-decker trains were officially unveiled on May 19 by regional president Renaud Muselier, together with Transdev CEO Thierry Mallet and Alstom France President Frédéric Wiscart. This debut signals a major shift in how regional rail services will operate going forward.

Omneo Trains Set to Improve Comfort and Frequency

Région Sud becomes the first in France to open regional rail to competition. Starting July 1, fares will drop 20%, but service will double to one train per hour on weekdays. Weekend schedules will also expand.

Passengers can expect a higher level of comfort onboard. Omneo Trains feature both first and second-class seating, luggage racks, and 12 bicycle spaces per train. Free Wi-Fi, an entertainment portal, and light catering are included.

Accessibility has also been improved. Each train allows step-free boarding, so passengers with reduced mobility can travel more easily and independently.

Omneo Trains Backed by Investment and Sustainability Goals

Security and customer service have been prioritized. Dedicated staff will support passengers onboard, while private security agents with body cameras will enhance surveillance alongside the existing CCTV.

Each 110-meter train accommodates 400 seated passengers or up to 730 in double formation. Powered by green electricity, they are designed for speeds up to 200 km/h, though current infrastructure limits operation to 160 km/h.

A new 2,000 m² maintenance facility has been completed in Nice. Built with environmental sustainability in mind, the center will help maintain a punctuality rate of 97.5% by keeping the fleet in top condition.

Alstom and Transdev signed a $271 million contract to deliver 16 eight-car trainsets. The trains were first presented in November 2023 and tested in the Czech Republic at Velim’s facility for high-speed readiness.
