CSX will construct flashing lights and automatic gates along the Harbor Drive crossing located in Hamilton County. The $562,576 project, entirely grant-funded from federal sources, is set to be completed on August 5, 2026.

The Columbus & Ohio River Railroad Company will upgrade three other crossings in Tuscarawas and Coshocton counties, including Chestnut Street, Saint Clairsville Road, and Schumaker Road.

The following initiatives will be allocated $873,981 to be completed by November 5, 2026, enhancing safety for car drivers as well as cargo carriers.

Ohio strengthens long-term rail safety strategy

The improvement, according to PUCO, is part of a larger initiative to reduce the number of accidents and make the infrastructure more resilient. This is because train corridors are always used both for passenger services as well as freight services.

An application can be made from local authorities for as much as $5,000 per project from the State Grade Crossing Safety Fund. The additional features included could be the installation of rumble strip markings, lighting, as well as improved signage.

By integrating federal and state resources, municipalities can customize safety services based on their own conditions while optimizing costs. All these initiatives indicate the expertise of PUCO in operational excellence.

By spending on modern warning systems, it not only reduces collisions, but it also provides safe, efficient transport corridors, which in turn supports the economy and workers of Ohio.
