Columbus & Ohio River Rail Road (CUOH), owned by Genesee & Wyoming Inc., secured a $705,994 grant. The company plans to extend a rail siding at its Zanesville yard with this funding. CUOH aims to invest $1.4 million to expand the siding by 4,800 feet and install a crossover.

This upgrade will connect the current 1,375-foot siding north of the yard to reduce congestion. The extension targets bottlenecks where CUOH intersects with two other G&W railroads in Zanesville. Consequently, the project will streamline operations and support new shippers in the region effectively.

ORDC Executive Director Matthew Dietrich emphasized the siding’s role in easing rail traffic. He noted that it will boost efficiency and attract businesses to the area.

Freight-rail Infrastructure Gains Momentum in Lancaster

Meanwhile, Cirba Solutions, a battery recycling firm, received a $150,000 grant for its Lancaster site. The company processes 15 million pounds of batteries yearly across five U.S. facilities. Cirba Solutions will construct a rail spur to transport bulk raw materials to Lancaster. This addition includes five storage tracks on the east side, each holding six bars. A pipe rack will facilitate loading and unloading materials at the new spur. Additionally, a rail scale will enhance operations on a siding off the Indiana & Ohio Railway.

The Ohio Rail Development Commission actively supports these projects to strengthen freight transport. Both initiatives promise economic growth and improved logistics for Ohio’s rail network.
