OCTA is gathering public feedback this month through meetings focused on its Coastal Rail Resiliency Study, which aims to secure 7 miles of California coastline for safe, long-term train operations. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The agency will host two public sessions—one in-person on July 15 in San Clemente and one virtual on July 29. These events aim to engage residents in shaping the study’s future.

OCTA Coastal Plan Aims for Long-Term Track Stability

The OCTA study focuses on the unstable coastal stretch between Dana Point and the San Diego County line. Unlike ongoing emergency repairs, this effort addresses 30-year structural resiliency.

In recent years, erosion and weather-related closures in San Clemente have exposed the need for both quick fixes and long-term solutions. So far, OCTA and Metrolink installed riprap along key sections.

They will also add sand and build retaining walls to shield the track from ocean impact. These efforts complement the broader study by protecting existing infrastructure while long-term options are evaluated.

OCTA Will Use Public Input to Finalize Rail Study

OCTA will use input from the meetings to draft a feasibility report, expected in 2026. These ideas may include reengineering segments of the rail line or rerouting tracks farther inland.

At the same time, a separate state initiative explores rail options for beyond the 30-year scope. Together, these programs aim to create a secure and climate-resilient transit corridor.

Residents are encouraged to register early for the virtual session. By involving the community, OCTA seeks to ensure that future transportation infrastructure reflects local priorities and environmental realities.
