Cargo transportation volumes increased by 5% in August

Ukrzaliznytsia continues to gradually increase the volume of freight traffic. In August, according to operational data, almost 10.8 million tons of cargo were transported, which is 5% more than in July, reports Railway Supply magazine with reference to the Ukrzaliznytsia website.
“5% growth seems to be not much, but we are fighting for every ton of cargo. We are constantly working to increase the export-import potential of the railway. We are building new sections, opening new connections with neighboring countries, increasing the capacity of western crossings,” said Alexander Kamyshin, Chairman of the Board of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia.
According to him, significant growth is observed in the transportation of strategic cargo – grain (+42%), primarily due to the unblocking of seaports.

Oil products (+3%) and building materials (+10%) also grew. “Iron ore (-7%) and ferrous metals (-10%) “sank” a little, but here the reason is clear: unfortunately, the decline in steel production in the world continues. But the decrease in coal transportation by 10% really worries me,” summed up Alexander Kamyshin.
The largest growth is recorded in export transportation. Thus, almost 3.5 million tons of cargo was transported for export in August, which is 14.7% more than last month. 6.2 million tons of cargo were transported in domestic traffic, almost 599 thousand tons were imported.
