The NTSB transportation disaster assistance course is now open for applications. The Transportation Disaster Assistance Division’s family assistance operations training is scheduled for March 17-19, 2026, as reported by Progressive Railroading.
NTSB transportation disaster assistance course: who should apply
The free, in-person course is intended for professionals who would support families after a major transportation accident. Eligible applicants include employees of rail, aviation, marine, highway or pipeline companies, as well as staff from government agencies, nonprofit organizations and hospitals.

Family assistance operations course format and location
Over three days, the interactive class brings together lectures, group discussions and hands-on activities, according to RailwayNews. Participants will take part in a group exercise and observe a mock family briefing led by NTSB personnel.

The class is limited to 50 participants, and although there is no tuition fee, each attendee must cover their own travel, hotel and other related expenses. Sessions will be held at the NTSB Boardroom and Conference Center in Washington, D.C., home to the NTSB’s Transportation Disaster Assistance Division.
Application deadline and selection timeline
Applications must be submitted no later than Jan. 7, 2026. Those selected to take part in the course will be notified by Jan. 14, 2026, and will receive confirmation of their registration status along with additional details about the training.
