The first train to enter operation consists of two five-car Class 730/2 electric multiple units. West Midlands Railway plans to deploy all 36 units of this type by the end of 2026.

Aventra trains deliver higher speed and capacity

These trains are the next step in the Aventra product line. Earlier, in November 2023, three-car Class 730/0 trains entered service, also built at the Derby plant.

The five-car Aventra trains offer improved specifications. Their top speed reaches 177 km/h, compared to just 145 km/h for the earlier version.

Additionally, they seat 406 passengers—more than double the 199 seats available in the three-car configuration.

Each train features inter-car gangways and an intelligent climate control system with floor heating. These upgrades ensure passenger comfort year-round, regardless of weather conditions.

The contract for these trains was signed back in 2017 with Bombardier Transportation. In 2021, the company became part of Alstom, maintaining production capacity in the UK.

A total of 84 trains were ordered: 36 five-car and 48 three-car units. All are assembled at the Derby facility—one of the key hubs of British railway manufacturing.
