In Indonesia, the first new Progress Rail GT38AC locomotives have entered commercial service, increasing cargo capacity and network efficiency throughout the country’s railway system. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

In July Indonesia first received a fleet of 13 GT38AC locomotives built in the US at the Progress Rail plant in Muncie. The first two units are already in service, following testing and adjustments.

The GT38AC was developed for use in Southeast Asia and Africa. This six-axle, 1,067 mm-gauge locomotive provides 1 490 kW of power and 450 kN of tractive effort, which is perfect for pulling heavy freight trains.
The Future of Rail Transport in Indonesia
In 2024, the national operator PT KAI ordered 54 more locomotives with a worth of 222.4 million dollars. From 2011 to 2021, the company already possessed 91 units of the model.
The replacements for these older G26MC-2U series, built by EMD from 1986 to 2008. In the same breath it announced that the GT38AC meets Tier 3 emissions standards and can run on a biofuel-diesel blend.
