Over the next ten years, Northern Trains aims to upgrade two-thirds of its existing fleet. Currently, 60% of the trains are over 32 years old, making replacements an urgent priority. The operator plans to acquire electric and hybrid trains powered by diesel and electricity. Contact-battery-powered train models are also under consideration.

Northern Trains seeks to unify its fleet to cut operational and maintenance costs while boosting efficiency. Hybrid trains will be equipped with systems that allow diesel engines to be replaced with batteries.

Contracts with manufacturers will be finalized by 2026, with deliveries of new trains starting by 2030. During the first phase, diesel models 150, 155, and 156 will be replaced. Additionally, 12 three-car trains will be purchased for the Transpennine route connecting Manchester, Leeds, York, and Huddersfield.
