North-South Tunnel Maintenance to Affect Berlin S-Bahn Services Over Three Weekends
07.01.2025
Passengers traveling through Berlin’s North-South Tunnel should prepare for disruptions over three weekends due to maintenance. The closures will affect S-Bahn lines, requiring alternative transportation options for commuters. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Temporary Closures in the North-South Tunnel
Starting this Friday at 10 p.m., Deutsche Bahn will suspend services between Südkreuz and Gesundbrunnen. Lines S1, S2, S25, and S26 will not operate until Monday morning at 1:30 a.m.

Travelers can use substitute buses, regional trains, and subway lines as alternative options. Officials recommend planning trips in advance, as higher passenger volumes could cause delays on replacement routes.
Additional closures will occur on January 17–20 and January 24–27, affecting sections between Yorckstraße and Gesundbrunnen. Lines S2, S25, and S26 will face suspensions again, while S1 services remain unchanged.
Why Maintenance in the North-South Tunnel Is Necessary
Deutsche Bahn has emphasized the importance of maintaining infrastructure to ensure reliability and safety. This work will stabilize new tracks installed last year, preventing long-term disruptions.
Crews will carry out tamping and adjustments, focusing on enhancing track performance and durability. Officials highlight that regular maintenance reduces risks and improves travel conditions for passengers.
Substitute buses will operate during closures, but authorities encourage using regional trains or subways. Travelers should monitor updates through official platforms to stay informed about schedules.
Renovation work last year led to similar closures, yet ongoing improvements promise better service reliability. Passengers are advised to allow extra time and plan routes carefully during these periods.
Customer service teams and station staff will assist commuters at key locations to manage traffic flow. Deutsche Bahn also provides online tools and mobile apps to help passengers adjust their travel plans efficiently.
Authorities are committed to minimizing disruptions while maintaining essential infrastructure upgrades. These efforts aim to sustain performance improvements and improve passenger satisfaction across Berlin’s transit network.
