Norfolk Southern Safety Train marks 10 years of training
04.01.2026
Norfolk Southern Safety Train has reached a 10-year milestone, marking a decade of first responder rail emergency training across the railroad’s network.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
In 2025, the train completed 16 stops to provide training on how to respond to rail-related emergencies through NS’ operation and awareness response program, as reported by Progressive Railroading.
Norfolk Southern Safety Train training program in 2025
Norfolk Southern officials said in an online Norfolk Southern “Story Yard” article that more than 5,800 first responders were trained through the program in 2025. The Safety Train is set up for immersive learning, combining boxcar classrooms with specialized tank cars used during the sessions—an approach also discussed in Railway Supply coverage of Norfolk Southern first responder training.
What first responders learn on the Safety Train?
The curriculum centers on safe practices around railroad track and equipment, with a focus on working safely near rail infrastructure. It also walks participants through how tank car valves and fittings work and reviews best practices for responding to rail emergencies.
The sessions include guidance on how to access information about the contents inside rail cars, consistent with Norfolk Southern’s first responder training resources.
“Norfolk Southern deeply values the relationships we have built with first responders across our network over the last decade,” said Robert Wood, NS director of hazardous materials. “We are proud to work alongside them and are grateful for their partnership in keeping our railroad and communities safe.”
