Norfolk Southern Expands Fleet Modernization Program

Norfolk Southern is ongoing with upgrading its freight fleet with extensive-scale DC-to-AC locomotive conversions. The latest milestone was at the Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania, aided by Wabtec, leader in rail technology, Erie.

Each rebuilt engine uses up to 25% less fuel, runs with 40% higher reliability, and has 55% increased haulage capability. The rebuild also gives the engine a 20-year extension in lifespan at half the price to purchase a new engine.

Engineers assemble each unit from scratch, putting in new operator cabs, alternators, motors, and blower motors. Staffers then paint, prime, and test the reassembled locomotives and put them back into commissioned service on the Norfolk Southern network.

Norfolk Southern Drives Innovation and Sustainability

The modernization program combines smart sensors and energy management technology to track real-time utilization. The technologies decrease idle time, increase fuel efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions throughout the fleet.

Executives point out that the 1,000th conversion is not just symbolic—it is a seismic change in the way that the company addresses sustainability and digital transformation. The project is consistent with overall industry objectives to reduce emissions and increase resilience in operations.

Norfolk Southern also invests in renewable fuels readiness, predictive maintenance, and analytical digital technologies. They are strategic actions that support its position as one of North America’s most progressive freight rail companies.
