NJ Transit strike threatens to paralyze Friday commuter travel
15.05.2025
The NJ Transit strike could halt all commuter rail service starting Friday, affecting more than 350,000 daily riders traveling between New Jersey and New York City. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

On Wednesday, engineers rallied outside NJ Transit’s Newark headquarters demanding fair compensation and improved working conditions. One sign read, “It’s time to pay the train crews.”

Daniel Feyjoo, an engineer with 19 years of service, stressed the importance of their role. He said their responsibilities carry serious consequences if mistakes occur.
Union leaders argue that engineers should earn $170,000 annually, compared to their current average of $113,000. They say the pay increase would reflect the job’s demands and risks.
However, NJ Transit disputes the figures. CEO Kris Kolluri states average annual earnings are already $135,000, with top engineers making over $200,000.
Union pushes for resolution ahead of NJ Transit rail strike
Tom Haas, union general chairman, said negotiations will continue Thursday. He hopes both parties reach an agreement before the NJ Transit strike begins.
Earlier this week, both sides met with the National Mediation Board in Washington, D.C., but the union has not released a statement. Talks remain active and time-sensitive.
If the strike occurs, it would be New Jersey’s first rail shutdown in more than 40 years. NJ Transit is preparing emergency measures to reduce disruption.
Limited contingency plans if NJ Transit Rail strike proceeds
The agency will increase bus service on select routes. Charter buses will operate from four satellite lots, two of which will travel directly into Manhattan.
Commuters using park-and-ride services should expect limited capacity. For instance, a round-trip from the PNC Arts Center to New York costs $48 and must be purchased separately.
PATH trains will operate on regular schedules and may add capacity. Amtrak will maintain service to Newark Airport, but only for Amtrak ticket holders.
The Port Authority will delay overnight closures on Hudson River crossings Thursday and Friday to reduce traffic congestion for Shakira concertgoers.
Meanwhile, NJ Transit has canceled service to MetLife Stadium for the Thursday and Friday concerts. Plans for Beyonce’s upcoming shows remain undecided.
