Newag and Hyundai are looking to jointly produce high-speed trains
21.09.2023
Newag and Hyundai Rotem have signed a protocol for joint participation in the announced project to purchase high-speed trains for Poland, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.
The purchase of high-speed trains is necessary to harness the potential of new railway lines under construction by CPK.
Rolling Stock Deliveries to Egypt
According to estimates, the railway network will require trains with a maximum operating speed of 250 km/h. These are multi-system rolling stock, including those powered by 25 kV alternating current. The plan involves acquiring 120-150 trains.
Both Hyundai Rotem and Newag participated in initial market consultations (WKR) for rolling stock manufacturers announced by CPK last year.
On September 19, during the Trako railway exhibition, the companies signed a cooperation protocol.
Currently, it takes the form of a letter of intent (memorandum of understanding), which is not binding on either party but indicates a direction and readiness for collaboration. The Koreans have been showing interest in the Polish HSR project for many years.
According to “Rynek Kolejowy,” the Koreans have proposed formalizing the ongoing negotiations with a letter.
“Hyundai Rotem” has such experience and is pleased to share it with Polish companies, commented Marcin Jędryczka, a representative of the manufacturer in Poland.
The exact share of both companies in the supply of rolling stock will be determined later, as it is unknown when CPK will announce the tender and its scope.
However, Newag has experience collaborating with major rolling stock manufacturers such as Siemens.
