New York subway now features platform barriers at 56 stations as part of a major safety upgrade, and officials plan to install them at more than 100 locations by year’s end. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Subway safety improvements continue across stations

Officials launched the barrier project under Governor Kathy Hochul’s 2025 State of the State plan after several incidents pushed the need for stronger protections. These barriers, widely used globally, prevent riders from entering the track area.

Unlike systems with full sliding gates, New York’s barriers leave openings aligned with train doors. This approach balances safety and operational efficiency while meeting the city’s growing demand for secure transit options.

Subway upgrades include lighting and surveillance systems

Alongside barriers, the MTA has completed brighter LED lighting at 342 stations, improving visibility and passenger confidence. Additionally, new security cameras on all subway cars reinforce safety across the network.

Crime statistics highlight progress, with major offenses down 3% compared to last year and nearly 10% lower than pre-pandemic figures. Officials attribute this trend to better infrastructure and increased monitoring.

Station selection for the barrier program focuses on feasibility. The MTA prioritizes routes with consistent stopping positions, high ridership, and island platforms for maximum efficiency. These decisions aim to enhance passenger protection in the busiest areas.

New York’s efforts underscore a commitment to modernizing transit safety. With expanded barriers, advanced lighting, and comprehensive surveillance, the subway system sets a new standard for secure and reliable urban transportation.
