New York MTA Expands ASL Interpreter Services

Passengers can scan QR codes on their smartphones to connect with live American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters. This service ensures real-time communication between commuters and Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) staff for seamless assistance.

Officials confirmed that this accessibility feature remains entirely free for those requiring interpretation support. By simplifying interactions with transit personnel, the program significantly improves accessibility throughout the subway system.

New York MTA Enhances Safety and Accessibility

Originally launched at Penn Station, Times Square, and Port Authority, the program achieved a 94% activation rate. Encouraged by success, MTA is expanding Convo Access to additional transit locations citywide.

MTA Accessibility Chief Quemuel Arroyo emphasized the importance of direct communication for affected commuters. By implementing these services, the transit authority fosters inclusivity and improves overall passenger experience.

Additionally, MTA introduced new safety announcements recorded by comedian Kenan Thompson this week. These messages remind passengers about essential rules, such as fare payments and riding restrictions.

Over 400 subway stations now broadcast Thompson’s announcements, reinforcing safety awareness. This initiative aligns with promotions for Saturday Night Live’s historic 50th-anniversary celebration.

By integrating these advancements, MTA continues to enhance accessibility across its transit systems. Improved communication tools empower individuals, making public transportation more inclusive for everyone.

The program was deployed after a successful initial Transit Tech Lab proof of concept. Transit Tech Lab is a private-public initiative created by the MTA and the Partnership fund for New York City to make New York transit more accessible, responsive, and efficient.
