Governor Kathy Hochul described the viaduct as “a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of Metro-North riders” and commended the team for finishing it “ahead of schedule and under budget.” She stated that the work is a proof of how modernization can be made to work if “we put riders first.”
Work crews employed a revolutionary gantry system to change out prefabricated bridge sections weighing 190,000 pounds during 19 consecutive weekends without interrupting train operations. That way, two of four tracks were available for train travel, and work built outward on other tracks, causing minimal shutdown.
New York MTA Opens Up for Infrastructure Upgrades
MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer stated, “This is a banner day for the new MTA,” and noted innovative planning, sound leadership made the undertaking “better, faster, and cheaper.”
The entire modernization will rebuild 4,500 feet of viaduct, increasing long-term reliability and safety. Other system and track work will extend into the winter, while Phase Two—from East 127th Street to East 132nd Street—is set for substation-sized substantial completion by September 2027.
According to experts, the Park Avenue Viaduct work shows how innovative techniques, competent management, and intelligent spending of funds can save money and time. And since sound rail transport sustains the city’s economy, this modernization work shall keep New York growing for years to come.
