North East Mayor Kim McGuinness has confirmed that Regent Centre in Gosforth will be the first station in a decade to receive the gates. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance safety and reduce fare evasion.

The North East Combined Authority is investing £2.1 million for the new ticket gates by 2027, as part of a £208 million transport investment package. The installation at Regent Centre is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Ticket Gates to Improve Metro Security

The exact number of stations that will receive the new ticket gates is still uncertain. Currently, 13 of the Metro’s 60 stations feature ticket gates, including major locations such as the Airport, Central, and Gateshead stations. Metro passengers at these stations are required to use a ticket or smartcard to pass through the gates.

Feasibility Study Will Identify Future Stations for Ticket Gates

Nexus, the operator of the Metro, has clarified that it will not install ticket gates across the entire network. Practical constraints at some stations will prevent the installation of gates.

Cathy Massarella, Managing Director of Nexus, stated, “We are working through the details of how to implement these schemes, including new gates and a new Shields Ferry landing at North Shields Fish Quay. We aim to complete the first installation at Regent Centre later this year.”

A feasibility study will determine which other stations could benefit from new ticket gates. Factors like safety, security, and revenue protection will play a role in this decision. Currently, 75% of passengers at major stations must pass through gates.

The new gates will help manage customer flow and ensure only valid ticket holders access the platforms, improving both security and fare protection.
