New Metro Cars from Hitachi Rail for Baltimore
03.10.2023
The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT MTA) has unveiled the first of 78 Hitachi Rail metro cars for the Metro SubwayLink line in Baltimore, USA, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.
These new metro cars will replace the rolling stock supplied by Budd (USA) when the line opened in November 1983 and significantly enhance passenger comfort.

In July 2017, MDOT MTA signed a $400.5 million contract with the joint venture Hitachi Ansaldo Baltimore Rail Partners, which includes Hitachi Rail Italy and Ansaldo STS USA (subsidiaries of Hitachi Rail), for the supply of cars and a radio-based train control system (CBTC) for Baltimore’s sole 25-kilometer metro line with 14 stations.
By the end of the second quarter of 2023, the daily passenger flow reached approximately 4,800 people.
The assembly of metro cars takes place at Hitachi Rail’s Miami plant, and the new cars, coupled in pairs, are scheduled to be put into operation from 2024 to 2026.
The new cars for Baltimore are similar to those Hitachi Rail supplied to replace outdated metro trains in the Metrorail network in Miami between 2017 and 2020.
