New Melton Station Opens With Four Elevated Platforms

The new Melton Station will open on 1 September with four elevated platforms, accessible entrances and infrastructure prepared for longer VLocity trains and future electrification.

The opening will give passengers access to the main station area after an intensive August construction program, Rail Express reported⁠, while some customer-service and toilet facilities remain at the temporary station until the wider precinct is completed. 

New Melton Station adds capacity and accessibility

The station has two entrances connected through a 16-metre-wide underpass, with lifts and stairs providing step-free access to all four platforms. Two platforms have been designed for longer nine-car VLocity trains, which are scheduled to begin operating on the Melton Line in 2027. 

The longer trains are expected to increase passenger capacity by 50 per cent during peak periods. The station layout also reserves two platforms for future metropolitan electric services as part of the planned electrification of the Melton Line.

A new stabling yard is under construction at Cobblebank, about 700 metres east of the station. It will support early services towards Southern Cross and is being future-proofed for electric trains. 

The wider Melton level crossing removal program⁠ includes four crossings in Melton and nearby Truganina. The crossings at Hopkins Road and Ferris Road have already been removed, while rail bridges are replacing the remaining crossings at Coburns Road and Exford Road. 

August works prepare new Melton Station for opening

Exford Road is scheduled to close at the level crossing from the evening of 11 August until 31 August. Crews will remove the boom gates, lower the road beneath the elevated railway and install the final bridge sections. 

Coburns Road is then due to close from 6 to 24 September for boom-gate removal and reconstruction of the road and footpath. Under the August construction schedule⁠, buses will replace trains on sections of the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines from 12 to 31 August. 

Train services are expected to resume on 1 September, allowing passengers to use the new Melton Station. Finishing work will continue later in the year, including a seven-bay bus interchange, station facilities, forecourts and landscaping.
