These trains replace the rolling stock from British Metro-Cammell (acquired by Alstom in 1989) used since the line’s opening in 1985.
Each train, with a claimed capacity of up to 3480 passengers, can run at a maximum operational speed of 80 km/h with a starting acceleration of 1.3 m/s².
The Q-Train is reported to be equipped with Mitsubishi Electric power systems, Faiveley couplers (part of Wabtec), and Hubner inter-carriage passageways.
It is also equipped with CRRC’s traditional predictive component diagnostics system.
A $779 million contract for supplying 93 such trains for various Hong Kong metro lines was signed in 2015.
In November 2022, the first 13 sets were launched on the Kwun Tong line.
