The newly launched SDD1 locomotives feature six axles and are built for 1067 mm gauge tracks. Each engine offers a power output of 1620 kW, specifically adapted for Africa’s demanding climate.

To improve operational reliability, CRRC equipped the locomotives with advanced control systems that enhance safety and automation throughout service.

According to Minister Matlombe, CFM plans to purchase a total of 15 diesel locomotives from CRRC, alongside 30 passenger cars and 250 freight wagons to upgrade the national fleet.

CRRC locomotives designed for African conditions

The SDD1 model was engineered with local requirements in mind, offering durability and resilience under high-temperature environments, while maintaining energy efficiency.

Previously, Mozambique sourced freight wagons from China and passenger units from India, but now aims to streamline its procurement strategy by strengthening ties with CRRC.

Investment in locomotives supports rail modernization

CFM’s decision to expand its locomotive fleet is part of a national strategy to modernize logistics infrastructure and boost passenger and cargo capacity across regional rail lines.

With this investment, Mozambique demonstrates a clear commitment to transport development and deeper integration with regional trade routes.
