Network Rail is advising passengers to check travel plans before summer journeys as major upgrades in Bransty Tunnel will affect the Cumbrian Coast Line. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The closure starts on 30 August and runs until 22 September, during which crews will replace sleepers, track, and ballast while installing new drainage. These works aim to eliminate flooding problems caused by water with iron ochre.

Network Rail Confirms Full Closure and Replacement Buses

To complete the upgrades, a full rail closure is required. Replacement bus services will keep passengers moving throughout the disruption period. Additionally, a preparation shutdown will occur between 25 July and 28 July.

Travelers should plan ahead because schedules will change significantly during these works. Checking National Rail Enquiries before departure will help avoid inconvenience and delays.

Network Rail Explains Timing and Project Goals

Darren Miller, Network Rail’s North West route infrastructure director, said: “We appreciate everyone’s patience during the extended closure of Bransty Tunnel. These upgrades are critical for future reliability and passenger comfort.”

He noted that the work was scheduled for late summer to minimize impact during peak holidays. After completion, travelers can expect fewer delays and improved performance on this scenic route.

This project represents a major step in strengthening the Cumbrian Coast Line’s resilience and delivering a better experience for all rail users.
