In the first phase, Netinera plans to purchase 14 single-deck trains for delivery in December 2027. These trains will operate at speeds up to 300 km/h and use the 15 kV AC electrification system.

This specification allows the new fleet to run not only in Germany, but also in Austria, Switzerland, Norway, and Sweden. Each train will feature seating for 450 to 520 passengers across four different service classes.

Netinera Expands Beyond Regional Rail Operations

The move represents a shift for Netinera, which currently focuses on regional rail and bus transport. Backed by Italy’s FS Group, the company now seeks a presence in the high-speed segment.

The tender also includes an option for 36 additional trainsets. These optional units will support 15 kV AC, 25 kV AC, and 3 kV DC, allowing for wider European operation.

Netinera Prepares to Compete with Deutsche Bahn

With this procurement, Netinera aims to challenge Deutsche Bahn and diversify Germany’s high-speed market. The strategy aligns with FS Group’s broader cross-border ambitions in Europe.

Although train length and configurations remain unspecified, Netinera emphasizes onboard comfort and service quality. Leading global train manufacturers are expected to submit bids.

This development could mark a turning point for Germany’s high-speed rail sector. Increased competition may lead to improved service offerings and greater innovation in long-distance travel.
