National Railway Historical Society Awards $150K in Grants

The National Railway Historical Society has awarded $150,000 in grants to 31 nonprofit organizations nationwide to support railway preservation and historical restoration efforts this year. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

These Heritage Grants empower local museums, historical societies, and rail preservation groups to protect, restore, and interpret key pieces of American railroad history.

National Railway Historical Society Supports Restoration Across the U.S.
The Army Transportation Museum Foundation in Virginia received $10,000 to restore a 1952 Brown Hoist steam crane. In Minnesota, the Friends of Historic Finlayson will use $5,000 to restore a 1909 Northern Pacific depot.
The Old Dominion Chapter in Virginia was granted $10,000 to repaint two vintage passenger cars. Meanwhile, the Harrisburg Chapter will install a fire and burglar alarm system in the preserved Harris Tower using its $5,000 award.
In Arizona, the Navajo County Historical Society will restore the Apache Railway RS36 800 using a $5,000 grant. The North Carolina Railway Museum will spend $5,000 on boiler tube installation for Steam Locomotive 17.
Grants from the National Railway Historical Society Advance Digital and Exhibit Projects
Digital preservation was also a focus. The Missouri Pacific Historical Society received $3,000 to digitize 200 large-format locomotive drawings. The Friends of the New York Transit Museum will digitize rare color slides with $4,550.
The Center for Railroad Photography and Art in Wisconsin plans to use its $5,000 grant to purchase a new digital printer for exhibition-quality prints. This grant honors longtime Heritage Grants committee member George Hickok.
In Texas, the Wichita Falls Railroad Museum will repurpose a WWII troop sleeper into a community venue using $3,562. The United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey will return the historic “Merci Train” boxcar to the state with $5,000.
By investing in restoration, digital access, and infrastructure, the National Railway Historical Society helps ensure that railway history remains preserved, accessible, and relevant for future generations.
