Greater Anglia to Be Nationalized in October 2025
13.05.2025
Passenger rail operator Greater Anglia will officially come under government control on October 12, 2025, according to statements by both the company and the UK Department for Transport. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This move follows the Labour government’s transport policy announced in summer 2024. The change in ownership will not affect service quality or the passenger experience.

The ministry confirmed that all employees will retain their positions and transition to the new public operator under the same working conditions.
Greater Anglia’s leadership in the rail sector
For the second consecutive year, the company leads the UK rail industry in punctuality. During the 2024/2025 fiscal year, more than 82 million passengers used its services.
Greater Anglia operates key routes connecting London with major Southeast England cities such as Norwich, Ipswich, and Cambridge, playing a critical role in regional transport.
Greater Anglia’s investments and future under state management
Since 2012, the operator has implemented an investment program worth £2 million aimed at modernizing its rolling stock, upgrading stations, and enhancing customer service.
The Department for Transport emphasizes that nationalizing the company’s assets is part of a wider reform to improve the rail network. The goal is to strengthen stability, optimize public spending, and rebuild passenger trust.
The transfer of Greater Anglia to state ownership marks a significant step in the government’s new transport strategy focused on long-term improvements in public rail services.
