NJ Transit showcased this innovative train model at its Kearny depot, highlighting advanced design features.

The new train, assembled with Multilevel III cars, will soon undergo testing to confirm its performance and efficiency. The first route for this electric train is expected to launch in New Jersey in 2025, with a full fleet deployment targeted by 2029.
These new cars will replace the older single-level Arrow III electric trains, originally manufactured over 40 years ago by General Electric. The Multilevel III cars promise an increased operational speed, reaching 177 km/h instead of 160 km/h, which is a substantial upgrade. Furthermore, these cars provide an extended maintenance interval, with 644,000 km between services, compared to the previous 32,000 km — a significant improvement.

In addition, the new model offers an 11% increase in passenger capacity, which is essential for NJ Transit’s commuter lines during peak hours. This advancement will notably improve accessibility and comfort on New Jersey’s suburban routes, accommodating the growing demand for transit services.
NJ Transit signed a contract for 113 Multilevel III cars with Bombardier Transportation at the end of 2018, before Bombardier’s merger with Alstom in 2021. To the initial order, NJ Transit added another 61 cars in February 2022 and July of this year, which will further strengthen its fleet.
The total cost of this deal is $914 million, reflecting NJ Transit’s commitment to enhancing its rolling stock and passenger experience. Alstom’s manufacturing facility in Plattsburgh, New York, produces these modern cars, utilizing the latest technologies and sustainable practices.
Through this program, NJ Transit systematically modernizes its fleet, offering passengers more comfortable and modern travel options.
