MTA Upgrades Affect OMNY Cards Services This Weekend
04.10.2025
The MTA stated that services of OMNY cards will be fewer this weekend as it will be undergoing a system upgrade, but passengers can continue tapping for paying their fares on subways and citywide buses.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Upgrading of OMNY Cards with New Digital Capacities
The MTA will run a significant OMNY cards system upgrade from Friday night through Sunday evening. Riders can continue paying with digital Wallets but will be unable to make new card purchases and reloads for a temporary period.

Since this upgrade refreshes payment infrastructure, all OMNY payments will settle in a day or a day and a half after settlement. And officers also committed that free transfers and earned fare capping are on throughout this transition period.
The MTA wanted passengers to purchase or reload cards by 7 p.m. Friday so they would not be disrupted. OMNY cards can be bought at vending machines, stores, online, and at MTA customer centers. Therefore, advance planning will make travel over the weekend run smoother.
The End of MetroCard with the Coming of OMNY Cards
The upgrade is helping the MTA towards its overall target of replacing the MetroCard by 2025’s end, Dec. 31. The milestone will bring an end to a 30-year-era in the city’s transit history and move New York closer towards a completely digital collection system.
Officials said that the upgrade prohibits recent technical holdups and bolsters reliability, speed, and security for the data. The reason that the OMNY platform currently processes over a daily amount of payments with MetroCards is that it has to adapt for future passenger demand.
In January, bus and subway fares will increase to $3 per ride. The MTA stated that revenue from this rate increase funds critical modernization, such as enhanced fare tracking and automatic balance features due out in the next OMNY refresh.
This achievement reveals the MTA’s experience and willingness towards innovation, and it demonstrates that the agency is prepared and able to provide a faster, smarter, and connected transit network for the New Yorkers.
