Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), in partnership with Austrian manufacturer Innofreight, has launched production of 80-foot InnoWaggon rail platforms at the InnoWay Trieste plant in Italy. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The first wagons have already been delivered to customers Yellow2Rail and Papierholz Austria.

InnoWaggon Platforms and InnoBogie Bogies — The Core of the New Operation
The partners aim to scale production to over 1,000 platforms and up to 3,000 bogies per year by 2027. At the heart of this project is the InnoBogie bogie, which is 25% lighter than previous models. This design enhances load capacity and reduces operating costs. Currently, the platforms are assembled from components supplied by MSC and Innofreight’s partner network.

However, the facility will soon implement a full manufacturing cycle, including welding, shot blasting, painting, and structural assembly.
From Wärtsilä Engines to MSC Rail Wagons
In 2024, MSC acquired the plant from Finnish company Wärtsilä, which had previously produced medium-speed marine diesel engines. At the time of the acquisition, MSC committed to hiring up to 300 workers. As of now, approximately 50 employees work at the site, with plans to expand the workforce to 260 in the near future.
The Trieste plant has become a strategic part of MSC’s effort to diversify its operations and strengthen its presence in European rail logistics. By focusing on localization and innovation, the company is enhancing its multimodal logistics capabilities and improving transport efficiency.
