MRT Jakarta Strengthens Urban Mobility through Expansion

Sumitomo Corporation and Nippon Sharyo won the contract based on their success in the previous phase when they supplied 16 train sets for phase 1. This led to the success of the entire project since Indonesia experienced its first metro railway service in 2019.

According to information gathered from Weni Maulina, the Director of Construction at PT MRT Jakarta, the purchase has given rise to more integrated systems when considering the infrastructure and management. According to her: “This new fleet shows Jakarta’s dedication to more modern, efficient, and eco-friendly transport services,”

Jakarta has been grappling with serious traffic congestion and air pollution due to the country’s rapid urbanization. Thus, the extension of metro services will assist in diverting more people away from private vehicles. The project for phase 2A will assist the city center in reducing carbon emissions.

MRT Jakarta and Japan Deepen Strategic Partnership

Japan remains an important contributor in the process of Indonesia’s infrastructure development. This project receives funding assistance through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), utilizing Official Development Assistance under the Special Terms for Economic Partnership. The kind of cooperation mentioned indicates the common goals for Indonesia related to the sustainable development of transport systems.

The 2A phase has a total length of 5.8 kilometers and links Bundaran HI to the historic Kota area in Jakarta. As of September 2025, the construction achieved 53.32% completion. This phase should last 56 months. This railway will boost capacity, safety, and the comfort of the commutes when completed.

Sumitomo and Nippon Sharyo will have supplied a cumulative total of 144 metro cars for the North-South Line when the contract is completed. The two companies are currently looking for opportunities to develop other railway systems both in Indonesia and elsewhere in the future.
