07.05.2025
Mozambique will allocate over €193 million to purchase locomotives and railcars and modernize the Ressano Garcia railway, which connects Maputo with Pretoria, by 2030. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Transport and Logistics Minister João Matlombe confirmed that the plan includes at least 15 locomotives, 250 freight cars, and more than 30 passenger coaches. He noted rising demand for transporting minerals by rail.

In September 2024, the first phase of track doubling on the Ressano Garcia line was completed. The €80 million investment boosted the line’s annual capacity from 13 to 24 million tonnes.
Mozambique Strengthens Partnerships with International Financiers
The African Development Bank granted $40 million to support rolling stock acquisition. An additional $30 million is expected to be secured for fleet expansion and three years of maintenance.
The investment includes 10 diesel-electric locomotives, 300 wagons, and 120 tank containers. These upgrades aim to improve Mozambique’s logistics resilience and boost corridor efficiency.
Mozambique Expects Growth in Railway Revenue
According to government projections, annual revenue from the Ressano Garcia line could rise from $225 million in 2022 to $360 million by 2036. This would significantly increase the railway’s role in the regional economy.
Such investment in rail infrastructure will help Mozambique reinforce trade ties with South Africa and improve the competitiveness of its economy in the southern African market.
