02.05.2025
Mozambique is investing €193.3M in a key rail upgrade to double the Movene–Ressano track and strengthen its transport link with South Africa. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Transport and Logistics Minister João Matlombe confirmed the project includes completing the last 25km of the Ressano Garcia Line. This strategic route connects Mozambique and South Africa, facilitating regional trade and mobility.

CFM (Mozambique Ports and Railways) previously completed the €80M first phase in September 2024. It covered Maputo to Secongene and expanded Maputo’s Central Station, boosting freight capacity from 13 to 24 million tonnes annually.
Mozambique Expands Fleet and Boosts Freight Transport
To support rising freight demand, the government will acquire over 30 passenger coaches, 15 new locomotives, and 250 wagons. These additions will enhance rail logistics for minerals and other goods.
Ok Matlombe introduced the first three 1.62MW SDD1 locomotives from CRRC Ziyang. These diesel-electric units are customized for African conditions with a 16.5-tonne axleload and a 1067mm track gauge.
New Mozambique-Bound Locomotives Feature Smart Technology
Each locomotive includes a corrugated louvre cooling system and modular air intake unit. An onboard intelligent system enables real-time monitoring and performance control, improving reliability in demanding environments.
“These are the first of 15 new locomotives that will boost our traction power,” Matlombe said. “They will strengthen operations across southern and central Mozambique.”
This investment reflects Mozambique’s goal to modernize infrastructure and improve regional rail capacity. The Ressano Garcia Line will serve as a vital link for cross-border freight and passenger travel.
By expanding rail services, Mozambique not only enhances its logistics sector but also reinforces its economic partnership with South Africa. These developments support trade, mobility, and long-term growth.
