Moldova’s railway sector gets decisive EUR 15 million push
04.06.2026
Moldova’s railway sector is moving toward a EUR 15 million funding framework after the government approved a draft law tied to the 2026 state budget. The measure covers modernization, infrastructure development and passenger rail transport.

Contracts before the Calea Ferată din Moldova reform ends
The initiative is built around financial mechanisms needed for two essential contracts. One concerns the multi-year management of railway infrastructure; the second covers public service obligations in passenger rail transport.
These contracts are described in the government draft document. Under the proposed framework, they may be signed before the reorganization of the state-owned enterprise “Calea Ferată din Moldova” is completed. For the government, that flexibility is meant to avoid funding delays and keep railway works moving.
Moldova’s railway sector and co-financed modernization
The funding is intended for railway infrastructure, including maintenance and repair of railway lines. It also covers the development of passenger transport services in line with the needs of the population.
The draft law introduces the possibility of co-financing modernization works. This approach is designed to make the use of public resources more efficient and help attract additional investment into the sector.
Simpler rules for European alignment
The document also deals with the approval of certain European railway regulations. A simpler procedure would support the harmonization of national legislation with European Union standards and help open the passenger rail transport market to more operators.
Authorities present the draft as part of the Republic of Moldova’s wider alignment with European standards. This direction is also reflected in the country’s official Reform Agenda under the Growth Plan for Moldova, while Railway Supply has covered related Moldova rail connectivity work in its report on EU funding for Moldova’s rail electrification.
