Modular AVA Bridge: Revolutionising Rail Infrastructure

The Modular AVA Bridge introduces a transformative approach to railway footbridge construction. By utilising off-site manufacturing, the bridge components arrive pre-assembled, significantly reducing on-site installation time. This method minimises disruption to rail services and lowers overall project costs.

Constructed with Outokumpu’s Forta LDX 2101 stainless steel, the bridge boasts high strength and corrosion resistance. This material choice extends the bridge’s lifespan to approximately 120 years, reducing maintenance requirements and associated costs.

Modular AVA Bridge: Enhancing Accessibility and Sustainability

Designed with inclusivity in mind, the Modular AVA Bridge features wide spans and integrated lifts, ensuring ease of access for all passengers, including those with mobility challenges. The bridge’s modular design allows for customisation to fit various station layouts, promoting widespread adoption across the network.

Environmental considerations are central to the bridge’s design. The use of sustainable materials and efficient construction methods contribute to a reduced carbon footprint, aligning with Network Rail’s commitment to sustainability.

The first operational Modular AVA Bridge is scheduled to open at Stowmarket Station in Suffolk during the summer of 2025. This initiative marks a significant step towards modernising the UK’s rail infrastructure, combining innovation with environmental responsibility.

Note: The Modular AVA Bridge is a collaborative project involving Network Rail, Walker Construction, Hawkins\Brown, Expedition Engineering, ARX, and the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC). The bridge design is open source, encouraging adaptation and production by other engineers and manufacturers.
