Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) introduced the modernized InterCity (ICN) train on October 24, 2024, in Yverdon-les-Bains. This train is designed to enhance passenger comfort and reliability across Swiss rail routes. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

SBB is conducting a large-scale modernization project for 44 ICN trains, investing over 500 million Swiss francs (€534 million). Scheduled for completion by 2031, the project will extend these trains’ service life by another 20 years.

The seven-car InterCity trains of the RABDe 500 series, developed by Bombardier Transportation (now part of Alstom), have been running in Switzerland since 2001, reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h. Each train has traveled approximately 8 million kilometers, and this modernization will enhance both their technical and aesthetic features.

The modernization program, launched in 2021, focuses on improving passenger comfort and safety. The project includes new floor and wall coverings, updated seating, tables with power outlets, and modern lighting systems.

SBB is also upgrading passenger information systems, while improved mobile connectivity will ensure high-quality coverage. Additionally, the dining car will feature a contemporary design, and the family area will be reconfigured for added convenience.

The program prioritizes technical updates, such as replacing wheelsets, traction motors, and other essential components. Measures to prevent corrosion and refresh exterior finishes will further extend the trains’ operational life.

About 150 specialists from the SBB facility in Yverdon-les-Bains are engaged in executing this ambitious project. The first modernized InterCity train will enter commercial service in 2024 following rigorous tests.

The second updated InterCity train is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2025. SBB aims to update seven to eight trains annually, ensuring the program’s timely completion.
