Modernization of East Midlands Railway Trains: Improving Service Quality

In April 2025, East Midlands Railway (EMR) launched its first upgraded Series 170 diesel train. The modernization of 44 trains in this series includes several significant improvements. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The £23 million project aims to upgrade the trains to enhance passenger comfort.

The work includes the installation of surveillance systems, charging sockets for devices, and the upgrading of seats, toilets, tables, and flooring. Additionally, a designated bike area will be introduced.
The design of the updated trains was developed by DGDESIGN from Derby. EMR plans to launch the second upgraded train in May 2025, with the rest being updated at monthly intervals. These trains will operate in the East Midlands and South Yorkshire regions.
East Midlands Railway Train Modernization: Improvements for Passengers
The modernization of Series 170 diesel trains is part of a larger EMR program. This £60 million program also includes the upgrade of Series 360 electric trains and Series 158 diesel trains.
The EMR project is focused on enhancing service quality and comfort for passengers. Once the upgrades are completed, the trains will meet modern comfort and safety standards. A key aspect is providing more comfortable conditions for long journeys.
