Mitsubishi Electric to Supply Traction Systems for NS Trains
11.08.2025
Mitsubishi Electric announced the start of traction systems deliveries for 60 double-deck NS trains being built by Spain’s CAF, with completion planned for 2031. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Traction Systems for the New Rolling Stock
Mitsubishi Electric, part of the Mitsubishi Group, began supplying equipment in July for long-distance trains based on the CAF Civity platform. The project covers 60 trainsets, equivalent to 300 cars.

The trains are scheduled to enter service in 2028 and will operate both on domestic routes and cross-border services to Germany and Belgium. This upgrade will boost passenger capacity and reduce travel times.
Traction Systems and Medcom Auxiliary Equipment
Polish power electronics manufacturer Medcom, in which Mitsubishi Electric acquired a 49% stake in 2015, is also involved in the project. Medcom will supply auxiliary power units to complement the traction systems.
Cooperation between NS, CAF, and Mitsubishi Electric creates a synergy between Japanese and European technologies. This approach strengthens Mitsubishi Electric’s position in the European railway technology market.
NS signed the contract with CAF in December 2022. The €600 million agreement includes 30 four-car and 30 six-car trainsets. The end cars will be single-deck, and the trains will reach speeds of up to 160 km/h.
Experts believe the project will improve passenger comfort, optimize energy use, and reduce operational costs. The new fleet will enhance NS’s competitiveness in a growing transport market.
Mitsubishi Electric expects that successful completion of the contract will pave the way for further orders in other EU countries. The company continues to implement innovative solutions, improving traction system efficiency while meeting high environmental standards.
