Millennium Station is undergoing a $8.1 million renovation to modernize its South Water Street entrance, improve accessibility, and enhance passenger comfort across Chicago’s vital commuter rail network.

Millennium Station Rehabilitation Enhances Access and Design
Metra has initiated an $8.1 million redevelopment project to reconfigure the Millennium Station entranceway along South Water Street. It emphasizes accessibility, safety, and design superiority.

The contract was awarded to PREMIER Design + Build Group of Buffalo Grove, supported by funding from the Federal Transit Administration and Illinois’ Rebuild Illinois bond program. Because of these investments, Metra expects timely completion and improved service quality by 2027.
New stairways, elevators, and canopies will be installed to provide safer access routes. And as part of enhanced lower-level entrance sightseeing improvements, passengers will have an easier time maneuvering peak hours.
Millennium Station Upgrade Widens Metra’s Modernization Program
Millennium Station project is among Metra’s larger infrastructure upgrades. Upgrades have already been done at 79th Street (Chatham), 87th Street (Woodruff), and 103rd Street (Rosemoor) as a part of the same contract.
Each renovation modernizes aging infrastructure and enhances commuter comfort. New lighting, digital displays, and vendor spaces will make the station more functional and welcoming. And because the upgrades focus on accessibility, passengers with limited mobility will enjoy barrier-free travel experiences.
Senior executives note that Millennium Station serves as both a downtown gateway and a regional connector for thousands of daily riders. Investing here reflects Chicago’s growing demand for safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation.
