New Services Through Midlands Rail Hub

The Midlands Rail Hub will bring two extra trains per hour in both directions on the Cross Country line, boosting capacity through Birmingham New Street.

This change alone will result in 5.4 million new seats each year, improving access for passengers across the network.

Redditch, Alvechurch, and Barnt Green will also gain one additional train per hour in both directions. Lichfield and Bromsgrove will benefit from more seats on key services.

Infrastructure Upgrades to Support Midlands Rail Hub

Major infrastructure works will support this expansion, including platform improvements at Birmingham Moor Street and Snow Hill stations.

Engineers will remodel Water Orton, widen the viaduct at Bordesley, and upgrade lines from Kings Norton to Barnt Green.

Two new rail corridors are also in development. The West Chord will connect services from the South West and Wales to Moor Street, while the East Chord will open access from the East Midlands.

Strategic Partnerships Driving Regional Growth

Midlands Connect leads the project in partnership with the Department for Transport and West Midlands Rail Executive.

Andy Clark, Head of Rail at Midlands Connect, described it as a flagship initiative that delivers faster, more frequent services and long-term economic impact.

He said the Midlands Rail Hub is a “win-win” for passengers and communities, enabling better regional mobility and sustainable development.
