Microprocessor controllers for Indian Railways air conditioners have been ordered from India’s electronics manufacturer MIC Electronics for rooftop air-conditioning units used on passenger coaches. The company says the product is fully designed in India and produced through fully localized manufacturing.

Indian Railways order and ministry approval

As reported by Business Standard, the order came from Indian Railways’ Northeast Frontier Railway after the Ministry of Railways of India granted approval in October to use this microprocessor controller model nationwide without local on-site trials.

Deployment is planned in Linke-Hofmann-Busch (LHB) passenger coaches, which make up the main share of India’s passenger rolling stock. MIC Electronics expects that successful operation in one of the network’s nineteen zones will make broader rollout easier—particularly as older rolling stock is replaced with LHB coaches and modern air-conditioned double-decker coaches; ETManufacturing cited similar expectations.

MIC Electronics controller functions and past deliveries

According to the manufacturer, the microprocessor controller regulates temperature using feedback control. Intelligent control reduces compressor wear and lowers the load on the coach electrical system. The unit also includes comprehensive diagnostics, remote monitoring, and protection of the air-conditioning system from failures. It uses a modular design, and its functionality can be updated via software and adjusted when needed.

Previously, MIC Electronics supplied Indian Railways with passenger information and emergency lighting systems, switched-mode power supplies, as well as LED displays and lighting systems.

Since 2014, India’s authorities have been promoting industrial localization and technology development. In procurement, including for the rail sector, companies with a high share of localized production receive pricing and purchasing advantages—relevant materials are published on the Indian Railways website. Local developers also have access to grant funding for import substitution, access to railway infrastructure, and tax incentives.
