The plan covers $40 million in design, research, and engineering. Governor Gretchen Whitmer explained the plan will establish the economy in the city of Detroit and ties with the community members, visitors, and nearby communities.

Michigan Central CEO Josh Sirefman also said thatDetroit’s innovation ecosystem grows fast and transit should grow with it. The hub will connect entrepreneurs and businesses with future opportunities all across the region.

Michigan Central Station Strengthens Cross-Border Connectivity

Amtrak aims at extending one or two Members are daily Wolverine trains from Detroit up into Windsor, Ontario. The extension will connect passengers straight up with VIA Rail Canada through the existing CPKC tunnel below the Detroit River.

The partnership also covers Ford Land, Conrail, and Essex Terminal Railway, which shall modernize its right-of-way in connecting Amtrak and VIA routes. A new mutual screening facility in Windsor shall simplify the process of customs checks.

Since trains are unable to proceed from the existing New Center station to Windsor without a tedious reverse move, moving operations to Michigan Central will result in no delay. The relocation will transform the restored 1913 landmark into a regional hub for sustainable mobility.
