24.04.2025
The Madrid Metro Network has expanded beyond the capital for the first time in a decade with a new section of Line 3 now reaching the southern suburb of Getafe. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

On April 21, 2025, Metro de Madrid opened the 2.6 km stretch between Villaverde Alto and El Casar. The project cost €129 million and marks the first expansion of the network since 2015.

El Casar station is equipped with six escalators, three elevators, and a 565-space car park. Charging stations for electric vehicles were also installed.
The station connects with Metro Line 12 and Cercanías commuter Line C-3, improving access to central Madrid from suburbs such as Alcorcón, Leganés, Fuenlabrada, and Móstoles.
Infrastructure Improvements Across the Madrid Metro Network
The operator expects the new section to serve around 35,000 daily passengers. After the extension, Line 3 now spans 17.49 km and includes 19 stations.
In 2024, over 75 million passengers used Line 3. The entire Madrid Metro Network handled more than 715 million passengers — an 8% increase compared to 2023.
Future Projects Driving Madrid Metro Network Growth
Madrid continues to invest in public transport upgrades. Extension works are underway on Lines 5 and 11, and automation is being introduced on circular Line 6.
These projects aim to reduce train intervals and enhance service quality. Madrid is firmly moving toward a more sustainable and high-tech urban transport system.
