Bucharest Metro to Upgrade Fleet with $230 Million Investment
23.04.2025
Bucharest Metro will invest $230 million to modernize its rolling stock on Line M4, aiming to replace outdated trains and increase service frequency to five-minute intervals. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Bucharest Metro to Replace Outdated Rolling Stock
The Romanian Ministry of Transport has confirmed the purchase of 12 new trains for Line M4. The contract is valued at $230 million, with deliveries expected within 48 months.

Officials stated that the current trains no longer meet passenger expectations. Frequent breakdowns, outdated technology, and a lack of spare parts hinder consistent service quality.
Currently, Astra IVA trains form the core of the fleet. While their service life is limited to 18 years, their average age has reached 39 years—more than twice the intended lifespan.
The replacement aims to lower maintenance costs and enhance operational efficiency. The European Investment Bank will provide funding for the project.
Bucharest Metro to Boost Service Frequency
Of the 12 new trains, nine will operate on the line while three will remain in reserve. This strategy will reduce intervals between trains to just five minutes, improving commuter accessibility.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to upgrade Bucharest’s metro system. In 2020, the city signed a contract with Alstom for 30 Metropolis trains, including 13 six-car sets, valued at over €100 million.
This modernization will enhance passenger experience and reduce operational risks. Updating the fleet marks a significant step in the development of Bucharest’s urban transport infrastructure.
