Today (Monday), Premier Roger Cook and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti will ride the first test train on the METRONET Thornlie-Cockburn Link.

Metronet’s Thornlie-Cockburn Link Enhances Public Transport for Perth

The 17.5km Thornlie-Cockburn rail link includes two new passenger stations: Nicholson Road and Ranford Road. It connects the Thornlie and Cockburn stations, creating Perth’s first east-west railway connection.

Authorities confirmed that travel times from the new stations will be quick and efficient. Trips from Nicholson Road station to Perth will take 26 minutes, while Ranford Road journeys will last 29 minutes.

This new rail connection also provides direct access for Mandurah line passengers to Optus Stadium. Transport Minister Rita Saffioti described it as a “game-changer” for southeastern suburbs.

Southeastern residents will now enjoy access to Perth’s world-class public transport network. To complement the project, the Government introduced a flat $2.80 fare, simplifying travel costs for all users.

Metronet’s infrastructure improvements extend beyond rail to cycling and walking paths near the stations. Over $3M is allocated for connectivity projects, benefiting both residents and commuters.

These upgrades include $1.65M for new paths between Queens Park, Cannington, and key recreational areas. Additionally, $1.48M funds shared paths on Bannister Road and Waratah Boulevard near Ranford Road.

Metronet’s Investment in Cycling and Walking Infrastructure

This $8.6M active transport investment aligns with government goals of promoting eco-friendly, healthy commuting options. The new paths prioritize safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Metronet’s Thornlie-Cockburn link is set to transform Perth’s transport system, enhancing accessibility. Its launch represents a major step forward in providing efficient and sustainable transit solutions.
