Metrolinx Launches Public Contest to Name Ontario TBMs
16.06.2025
Metrolinx has launched a public contest to name two tunnel boring machines that will help construct the downtown portion of the Ontario Line in Toronto. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

These machines, recently shipped from Germany after assembly and testing, will dig twin tunnels from Exhibition Station to the Don River through Toronto’s dense urban core.

Metrolinx calls on residents to submit TBM names
Metrolinx encourages participants to submit names inspired by local history, landmarks, or cultural icons along the Ontario Line route. Submissions are open through June 23.
Residents can also propose creative name pairs, as the machines will work together underground. The contest aims to build community connection and promote public engagement.
After the deadline, Metrolinx will shortlist entries for a public vote. Winners will be credited and invited to a media event at the launch site when tunneling begins.
Metrolinx prepares launch site for Ontario Line TBMs
Construction on the launch shaft began in November 2024 and continues east of Exhibition Station. The 16-meter-deep shaft will serve as the machines’ entry point.
Crews expect to deploy the TBMs later this year, once final site preparations wrap up. This section of the Ontario Line will help reduce congestion and improve east-west mobility.
The full Ontario Line will stretch 15.6 kilometers, connecting several key districts in Toronto with rapid transit service. It will integrate with existing lines to enhance overall connectivity.
More details about the contest, including rules and how to submit names, are available on the Metrolinx website at metrolinx.com/NameOurTBMs.
