Kitchener Line Upgrades Transform Regional Connectivity

Metrolinx entered into an agreement with the CN Rail to acquire 26.2 kilometers of corridor between Georgetown and Bramalea. This provides the agency with exclusive possession of the corridor and long-term planning of services.

Through this ownership, Metrolinx will be able to build capacity, upgrade infrastructure, and accelerate travel. Since the freight operations of CN are no longer capping scheduling, trains will increase frequency throughout the day.

Metrolinx will build more than 40 kilometers of new track and upgrade existing infrastructure like bridges, signals, and platforms. Once it gets finalized, the construction would start to accommodate hourly service to Kitchener and Guelph and 30-minute service to Mount Pleasant.

Kitchener Line Progress Under the GO Expansion Program

Several enhancements have already been made by the agency along the Kitchener Line, such as the 2.6-kilometer passing track in Breslau and higher platforms at the Guelph Central GO Station. Additional operational flexibility and increased traffic management are realized through the new store track west of the Guelph.

Since 2018, Metrolinx has increased the number of trips weekly between Union Station and Kitchener by doubling and reduced the average time of travel by 15 minutes. It also increased the midday and evening service between Union Station and Bramalea to the interval of every 30 minutes.

These improvements are part of GO Expansion, the $70 billon investment program combining regionals, subway, and light rail lines. And because each stage yields measurable rewards, riders receive more frequent transit and reduced travel time year after year.

Metrolinx works towards the construction of a sustainable and integrated transit system that catalyzes economic growth, serves communities, and boosts everyday mobility throughout the region of south-central Ontario.
