Metrolink Expands Smart Crossing Technology in Los Angeles County
28.10.2025
Metrolink keeps on upgrading the rail system in Southern California by implementing Smart Crossing Technology throughout Los Angeles County. The project increases levels of safety and efficiency of travel.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Metrolink drives innovation through Smart Crossing Technology
The new Wireless Crossing Nearside Station Stop (WCNSS) communications went into implementation on October 13 at Baldwin Park Station on Pacific Avenue and Ramona Boulevard. As a result of the earlier system, whenever the crossing gates were actuated due to a train movement, congestion on the road increased.
The new WCNSS system now interoperates with the Positive Train Control (PTC) system. The crossing gates remain idle while the train stops. Gates only close once operations resume.
This change helps avoid delays and builds the community’s trust in rail transport security. In addition, since the train communication system talks to intelligent sensors directly, both passengers and road users enjoy smooth flow operations and reduced wait times.
Metrolink wins national recognition for smart mobility
The Smart Crossing Technology by Metrolink won the Innovation Award within the category of Smart Mobility at the latest 2025 Railway Technology Excellence Awards. The award recognizes the success of the solution in combating delays due to traffic and increased citizen satisfaction.
The initial system began at the end of June 2024 at the intersection of Del Obispo Street and San Juan Capistrano. This system reduced over 1,500 unnecessary events and 36 hours of wait time per year. The success led to an increase in the WCNSS system at various corridors within the 545 miles of the rail system of the Metrolink.
City of Pomona Mayor and Metrolink Board Director Tim Sandoval said the agency’s investment shows how innovation directly improves safety and convenience. And because Southern California continues to grow rapidly, Metrolink’s technology-driven approach strengthens its position as a forward-thinking mobility leader.
