Metrolink has expanded its smart crossing technology to Riverside and Moorpark, aiming to reduce traffic delays and improve safety through real-time communication with train control systems. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The new system, called Wireless Crossing Nearside Station Stop (WCNSS), now operates at Columbia Avenue near Riverside-Hunter Park/UCR Station and Moorpark Avenue west of Moorpark Station. A CRISI grant awarded in 2018 funded these upgrades.

Metrolink Expands Innovation with Smart Solutions

Previously, crossings activated when trains approached, then reset during station stops, lowering gates again once trains departed. This caused unnecessary delays for road traffic and increased driver frustration.

WCNSS prevents that by linking to Metrolink’s Positive Train Control system. The gates stay inactive until trains fully clear crossings, reducing repeated activations and improving traffic flow around busy stations.

Metrolink first implemented WCNSS in 2022 along seven Arrow service crossings. Last year, Orange County’s Del Obispo Street Crossing avoided 1,584 activations and 36 hours of delays after the system was installed.

Metrolink Focuses on Safety and Efficiency Goals

Earlier this year, San Bernardino’s Juniper Avenue also received the technology, showing continued commitment to network-wide upgrades and smart infrastructure improvements.

Currently, 52 more locations qualify for this technology. Metrolink actively seeks additional funding to accelerate deployment and improve transportation efficiency across Southern California.

By investing in intelligent systems, Metrolink demonstrates its dedication to passenger safety and community convenience. These efforts reflect a broader strategy to modernize transit and support smoother traffic conditions for drivers.
